Research & Transfer

Research & Transfer

The GIGA conducts social-science research with real-world relevance on Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, and on global developments. It is dedicated to research-based knowledge transfer and policy exchange.

  • Global Approach to Scholarship

The GIGA works with perspectives, concepts, and experiences from different world regions. It stands for research that is global in content, reach, and structure.

    Global Approach to Scholarship

    Research

With its global approach to scholarship, the GIGA analyses how political, social, and economic transitions originate, and how they unfold across the world and within the regions of the Global South. Research is guided by a set of overarching questions: How can participation and accountability in different political regimes be created and maintained? How can peace and security be achieved and conflict be overcome? How can inclusive and sustainable development be fostered? How do changing regional and global orders influence policy-making and impact on problem-solving capacities?

The institute’s research (1) combines in-depth area expertise and cutting-edge comparative methods (“Comparative Area Studies”), (2) covers different levels of analysis – global, regional, national, local – and (3) applies and develops innovative theoretical and empirical approaches, engaging with ideas and practices from different parts of the world. We balance our commitment to rich empirical detail with keeping a close eye on how these details add up to the bigger picture.

    Transfer

The GIGA addresses issues with high societal and political relevance. Through their research, our scholars identify trends early and provide strategic analyses, giving political and social debates important impetus.

On the basis of our research, we actively engage with academic, political, and societal stakeholders in Germany, at the European and international levels, and in the regions of the Global South. Research-based policy exchange and knowledge transfer are essential elements of our mandate.

We collaborate with leading institutions and researchers worldwide and we are active in the regions we study via Research Platforms, established and new networks, and research stays. Our GIGA Library fosters a unique and rich collection of literature on Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and global issues. We make the results of our research readily available to a global audience (Open Access).

The GIGA disseminates its research via high-impact journals and publishing houses. Our various events and open-access publications bring together leading academics and practitioners for dialogue and exchange. We address the media (Press Centre) and the general public, also via our Social Media channels.

Dr. Thomas Bagger, Director-General for Foreign Affairs at the Office of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Berlin

"Beyond its renowned academic research, GIGA has successfully expanded its role of providing advice to policymakers. At the Bundespräsidialamt we have profited greatly from the knowledge and expertise of GIGA's President and its researchers in the preparation of Presidential foreign visits."

    GIGA Distinguished Speaker Lecture Series

The GIGA Distinguished Speaker Lecture Series brings leading minds in academia and policy from all over the world to the Institute to stimulate public exchange on key global developments. This series of lectures by top scholars and leading practitioners was initiated with funds from the Federal Foreign Office and inaugurated at City Hall hosted by the Hamburg Senate. Since its inception in 2015 this GIGA flagship event is curated by our President Prof. Amrita Narlikar. We look forward to continuing these important conversations with our esteemed guests.

    Research Infrastructure

The GIGA is home to the largest non-university information centre for area studies and comparative area studies in Germany. With its library collections, its open access activities, its provision of research data, and its various services to the academic community and other audiences it fulfils important research infrastructure tasks.
